PP 115: Design, Freelance & Mental Health with Scott Biersack of @Youbringfire

Why do we compare ourselves to others?

Why do we feel the need to burn the midnight oil and to push ourselves to burnout?

Why do we put so much pressure on ourselves to have shit figured overnight?

"Comparison is the thief of joy." -Teddy Roosevelt

Based on my age, I've felt like I've needed to grind 10x times harder to catch up with people whose level I felt like I needed to be at. I got all wrapped up in the shit I can't control in lifeβ€”and it affected my physical health, mental health, relationships, and more.

Comparison made me view my creative grind as a sprintβ€”like I’m stuck playing ketchup to everyone’s mustard (that was a bad pun but you get the point).

More and more, I’m realizing that we’re all on our own separate marathons with our separate destinations. I’m learning not a single path is a one size fits all.

I’m learning that, the more we focus on our health (mental, physical, and even spiritual) and cultivate fruitful relationships, the more it comes back into play with our creative pursuits. It’s all connected, and you don’t have to be plugged in 24/7 to be successful.

Attracting Life-Changing Opportunities with Scott Biersack

Queue today’s guest: he’s done work for juggernauts like Target, Netflix, Starbucks, Adobe, and Facebook to name a fewβ€”and he’s only 25 (but remember, we’re all on our own paths now, so kill the comparison). I’m talking about my brother, Scott Biersack aka Youbringfire, on social media.

He’s a legend-in-the-making with his style, craft, and creativity; but what I admire the most is the attitude and self-awareness that he approaches life with. It’s truly inspiring and makes you think of the bigger picture.

In today’s episode, Scott and I talk about:

  • How his 365 lettering passion project jump-started his career

  • How burnout and rock bottom were necessary obstacles that led to positive change

  • The importance of your mental and physical well-being

  • The Law of Attraction and changing the lens in which you see in the world

  • His favorite video games, typefaces, and of course, pizza

Overall, we get stupid deep and transparent in today’s conversation about things like pricing and life. Scott doesn’t hold back, and I think you’re really going to appreciate it like I did.
