Deneen Pottery Illustrator Series - Growth Takes Time Mug

Growth Takes Time Illustrator Series art collaboration by Scotty Russell & Deneen Pottery

Growth takes time

You realize one little life hack once you fully commit to growing within a focused lane…

If it’s not a Hell Yes, it’s an automatic Hell No.

When Deneen Pottery starts asking if you’re down for another Illustrator Series mug collab…

The answer is ALWAYS a Hell Yes!

It’s been almost 3 years since my previous mug collaboration with my Deneen family.

The past designs all revolved around cats and dogs which is cool and all…

But this time around, I wanted to showcase a different style of craft that I’ve been honing and connecting with.

I wanted this design to not only speak to my own personal growth along my creative quest…

But also the growth I’ve seen as a father with 3 pizza rolls of my own to raise.

And finally, I want a beautiful soul like you who’s slowly sipping from this mug to reflect on and appreciate your own growth too.

Skull Symbolism 💀

I’ve loved drawing skulls since I was a young hellion.

But I get it…

Most people immediately associate skulls with something dark, dreary, and horror-related.

This piece is different.

The spirit of this design is injected with a heavy dose of positive + empowering perspective.

To me, a skeleton/skull symbolizes:

  • Equality—we all look the same underneath these meat suits.

  • Living in the moment vs. being glued to a screen aimlessly doom-scrolling.

  • Betting on yourself and chasing what you want.

  • Not living with regrets when you’re cooked on your deathbed.

  • Life is beautiful—find growth in the darkest moments.

When you see a skull through this angle, it can lead to asking questions…

There are 2 questions I like to ask myself as I sip out of this charming chalice:

1. What will my tombstone read the day my time has expired?

2. What are the types of things people will say about me at my funeral?

The message behind “Growth Takes Time” goes deeper and is fueled by leaving a legacy.

My goal on this Earth’s surface is a mission of creative service.

I want to make a massive impact that has a rippling effect far beyond my time here.

I can’t do that by passively existing and being afraid to find new growth in unexplored rough soil.

Maybe these questions will challenge you to build your own legacy?

Someone I know who buys into the same vision is Niles Deneen, owner of Deneen Pottery.

Here’s some additional enlightenment he provided after I shared the early sketch of this design.
